Things to do in Keswick

Surrounded by the finest fells in the Lake District National Park, Keswick is an ideal location for walking, running, climbing, cycling, golfing or simply just enjoying the fantastic scenery. Doorstep walks range from gentle strolls along the shores of Derwentwater to gruelling hikes over some of the toughest and highest fells in England.

The charming and historic town of Keswick offers a wide range of independent shops, tea rooms, museums, cafes, bars, restaurants and probably the most enviable selection of outdoor retailers in the country, including George Fisher, Rathbones, Keswick Boot Co, Cotswold, Needle Sports and Blacks.

Most importantly do not miss Derwentwater - Keswick's beautiful lake surrounded by the most stunning scenery in the Lake District. You can stroll down to it, walk around it, try a new activity on it, take the launch boat along it (discount launch tickets are available to purchase direct from Linnett Hill) or walk the fells surrounding it....a MUST while you are in Keswick.

Walking, Running and Climbing

There are many amazing fells around Keswick and the Northern Lakes, all with spectacular views:

  • To the North, there is the imposing Skiddaw range.
  • To the East is Blencathra, Clough Head and The Dodds stretching towards the famous Helvellyn range and the Lake District's very own ski tow!
  • To the West is the stunning Grisedale Pike and fells of the Newlands valley - Coledale's 15 mile horseshoe walk is one not to be missed taking in Sail and Causey Pike. 
  • To the South lies Borrowdale with its amazing fells of varying heights. From here you can see Scafell Pike - the highest mountain in England with a summit of 978 metres.

Cycling and Mountain Biking

Keswick is situated on the C2C route and this fascinating area should appeal to cyclists of all ages and abilities. You can adapt your route to take in picturesque country lanes or remote off-road tracks surrounded by a stunning Lakeland landscape.

In addition Keswick is a key stop over point when completing the 14+ day 'End to End' (Lands End to John O'Groats) cycle adventure.

You are spoilt for choice…eating out in Keswick will not be a disappointment. Choose from the many traditional Lakeland pubs, bistro restaurants, fine dining, local cafes or take-aways and there's always fish and chips!

Shopping

Keswick holds a market every Thursday and Saturday in it's market square around the Moot Hall offering numerous stalls selling local produce, art, crafts, books and maps. There are also many independent retailers, galleries and a host of outdoor shops catering for all means of outdoor activities.
